You might find that what you thought was correct in English, isn’t! DO SUBSCRIBE TO THE ENGLISH NUT AND HIT THE BELL ICON SO YOU GET TO KNOW WHENEVER THERE’S A NEW VIDEO! What’s the difference between ‘letter’ and ‘alphabet’? Between ‘wedding’ and ‘marriage’? And why aren’t you pronouncing certain common words correctly? Does the world needs more English nuts like me? All this and more in this video.

Why improving your English is important!

Episode #81 TITLE: Why good English is important. I believe that how something is articulated, to a great extent, determines the meaning of it: The expression is the essence of the substance. (That’s a quotable quote from The English Nut.) More about it in the video. Do you know what I learned about English from Dr Shashi Tharoor? That’s in the video too. I’m also going to tell you what mathematics has got to do with good English. I studied mathematics in college.

Examle 1

The vindication for my perspective lies, perhaps, in something I learned there—the notion of the elegant solution. One example of an ‘inelegant solution’ that comes to mind in the context of language is the over-used ‘very’. We often plonk it before an adverb or adjective to intensify its impact, but there is always a more precise word available that includes the sense of the very. Thus, ‘very good English’ is not very good English. Replace ‘very good’ with ‘excellent’ and, voila, you have excellent English. Every pedant has his pet peeves. Let’s start with the alphabet: It is not the same as a letter.

Example 2

If I said my name starts with the ‘alphabet t’, I would be wrong. More in the video on that. And then there is marriage. It’s not the same as wedding. Mix up the two at your own peril! Mispronunciation is yet another vexation—starting with the word ‘pronunciation’ itself. People mispronounce the word as ‘pro-noun-ciation’. Learn the correct pronunciation of this and other words. I believe that in language, as in art, you must know the rules before breaking them.

Example 3

Otherwise you are just spattering paint on canvas, the way some ‘artists’ do. Be like Picasso, the great Spanish painter, instead. Recently, I learned something from fellow English nut, Dr Shashi Tharoor. He said that if the same English mistake is made often enough, it gets accepted as correct. His example was the word ‘momentarily’. Misunderstanding its meaning could lead to a hair-raising situation. Hear the story in the video. Clearly, the world needs more English nuts to point out—and hopefully to prevent—such hair-raising language misunderstandings. And, of course, to teach people to communicate elegantly—

Example 4

without resorting to ‘black tape’. Do you have certain pet peeves when it comes to English mistakes? Do write them below. And before you go, here’s a request. 1. I could find that many of the words you’ve pointed out are mispronounced by the veterans of English itself ..even in the classes of English Literature professors make these mistakes often..I wish you should be in college to teach English in the best way…students will be fortunate to have you

  2. Good one ! We in India tend to make many mistakes which are unique to us, though English isn't our native language. My pet peeves are improper use of homonyms, such as using there instead of their, or were for where, etc. Also, the word 'prepone' is so used so frequently in India, that even Dr Shashi Tharoor had remarked that the word should be part of English. I prefer the British English over other dialects. I often find even news readers on TV speak grammatically incorrect English. Likewise, those who were educated in convent schools tend to speak grammatically incorrect English, though they feel it has a swag they can flaunt.

  3. The Government is pushing to nationalised Hindi language in every sectors. I feel so illiterate as the Boss from the heartland was not willing to hear me out in English and my second language while in school was a regional language. Now I've decided that my kid should opt Hindi as 2nd language and give up the regional language.

  4. Hai… I am worryingly writing this, the reason is that i have been practicing English learning for the past 5-6 years. Yet I find it difficult to put the words in sentences and recollect the appropriate word, even though I have been learning new words everyday. I feel that I still lie somewhere between basic and average-basic level. And I could sort out the reason anyway, not having a partner to speak with could be one of the reasons. Please do get me some solutions and suggestions to go to next level. Readers also can help me. Thank you. Your videos are awesome.

  5. Sir.. When everyone has their own version of English, why don't we brand the way we pronounce (l'm talking of the mistakes we make) under Indian English.

  6. Hi The English Nut,
It's my entirety to create a playlist where you teach about the basics of grammar otherwise you're improving our vocabulary simultaneously grammar! Thank you for that. But what I noticed is we lack the basic grammar rules and I've wren and martin and other books but I don't like opening them to learn grammar rather I switch to your videos.
If it's not possible for you to create a playlist make a video on how to learn grammar (from basics to grammar nazi)
    With each step mentioned briefly.

    Hope you'll address my concern.
    Regards,
    Your subscriber ❤
